As public conversations around Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) increase, children may worry about themselves, their family, and friends getting ill with COVID-19.

Our in-house microbiologists have written some short explanations of the virus, which may help you discuss it with children.

COVID-19 it is a new virus, a bit like the flu. It can cause coughing, sneezing and a fever. Anyone could be infected and become ill, but it may make older people like your grandparents very ill.

Try not to worry, it may seem a little scary, but most people do recover from this illness. Doctors and scientists are working very hard to help people stay healthy.

It can be passed from person to person by touch, so it is very important you remember to wash your hands properly, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, sneezing, using the toilet and before you eat anything.  If you cough or sneeze, do it into a tissue, or your elbow, and throw the tissue away.

Keep your hands out of your mouth, nose and eyes. This will help keep germs out of your body.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, following these 5 steps –

1. WET YOUR HANDS
2. PUT SOAP ON YOUR HANDS
3. SCRUB YOUR HANDS TOGETHER TO MAKE BUBBLES
4. RINSE YOUR HANDS
5. DRY YOUR HANDS THOROUGHLY

You can sing your favourite song (or sing the 'Happy Birthday' song twice) while you do this.

Edward and Emily, the Evans Vanodine Bug Busting Team, can help you learn more about why it is important to keep your hands clean. Visit their website, where you will also find lots of puzzles and activities to do. Visit  http://www.childrenshandwashing.co.uk/wash-your-hands
