Pseudomonas is a gram-negative, environmental, opportunistic bacteria. It is commonly found in the environment, such as in soil and water, and is associated with poor hygiene.

Pseudomonas has become one of the major causes of healthcare-associated infections (HAI). These are infections which are not present at the time of admission but can be acquired during treatment and can be a serious threat to public health. For vulnerable individuals, such as those who have weakened immune systems, it can cause a severe infection and, in some cases, be life-threatening.

Transmission is possible through contact with contaminated surfaces or equipment, and from person to person via hand to skin contact. Therefore, good surface and hand hygiene is essential.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the obligatory test organisms in the chemical disinfectant bactericidal EN test methods, which include EN 1276, EN 16615, EN 13727 and EN 13697.
