Norovirus Research Update

8 January 2014

Norovirus, the 'winter vomiting disease', has become a great concern as it is highly infectious and at present there is no test method available using Norovirus.

Companies currently use Feline Calicivirus as a surrogate test virus. However, research has demonstrated that the virus is more susceptible to disinfectant than Norovirus and therefore it is not a good indicator for activity against Norovirus.

The Health Protection Agency stress that good hand hygiene is essential during outbreaks, especially if you are likely to come into contact with someone who is ill or may be vulnerable.

The HPA recommend washing hands regularly with soap and water.
