Meningitis Outbreak

17 March 2026
Following the recent cases of meningitis in the UK, our technical team have put together some guidance and advice.

What is Meningitis?

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This infection causes swelling and can be triggered by a wide range of microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria.

Symptoms

Common symptoms include:
•    Fever
•    Stiff neck
•    Sensitivity to light
These symptoms can vary, and this list is not exhaustive.

How Meningitis Spreads

Meningitis is usually transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids such as saliva. Outside the body, the organisms are relatively easy to destroy. Effective hand hygiene, cleaning, and disinfection practices can remove them safely from contaminated surfaces.

Recommended Cleaning and Disinfection

Government guidelines advise:

Thoroughly clean surfaces with detergent. Disinfect using Evans Chlor Tabs at a 1,000 ppm available chlorine, 1 tablet in 1 litre of water. Rinse any residue with clean water. Bedding and clothing should be handled carefully and washed with detergent on a 60°C cycle.

As an alternative to chlorine, Safe Zone Plus is recommended. It has been tested to meet several key medical area standards, including: EN 13727, EN 13624, EN 14561, EN 14562 and EN 14348.
