Prior to the introduction of the European Union Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR) (EU 528/2012), the disinfectant market was largely unregulated, allowing products of questionable efficacy and unknown safety profiles to circulate freely. The BPR was introduced to address this directly, standardising the requirements for disinfectants across Europe, ensuring that only products with authorised label claims and environmental data are permitted.Developed and patented in the 1970s by UK manufacturer Evans Vanodine, Buffodine was the first buffered iodine disinfectant of its kind. It is specifically designed to kill viruses such as IPN and VHS on the outer membrane of eggs without penetrating or damaging them, protecting stock at the most sensitive stage of the production cycle. Evans Vanodine has invested in ensuring this essential disinfectant is still available to the aqua industry.
However, other non-authorised products are sold illegally within the European market. Importers and users of such products are exposed to regulatory fines and, critically, no verified proof that the product does what it claims. With mortality and hatchability rates on the line, there is a significant risk in using an unregulated product.
