Infection Control, including Norovirus

5 January 2017

Your environment may look clean, but micro-organisms can be present; some of these are harmful, some are not.

Infection prevention and control measures aim to ensure the protection of those who may be vulnerable to aquiring an infection. An effective programme can reduce the transference of infectious diseases, caused by micro-organisms (bacteria, fungi and viruses), which can be spread in various ways, including direct or indirect human contact. Regular or frequent disinfection of high touch surfaces will reduce the number of micro-organisms on these surfaces and help to prevent their spread.

Norovirus is the most common cause of infectious gastroenteritis (diarrhoea and vomiting) in England and Wales. The disease was historically known as 'winter vomiting disease' due to its seasonality and typical symptoms. The disease is more prominent during the winter months but infections can occur at any time of the year.

Norovirus is highly infectious so particular attention to good hygiene and cleaning should be observed during outbreaks.
